Neurology self monitoring

We've begun the trial of an app within our specialist neurology department to monitor patients.

Thousands of patients require follow-up appointments each year across the NCA and this app will reduce the need for some of these visits, while keeping the clinical team up to date on a patient's progress.

The online tool and app – the Mindwave Maia platform - enables patients to input details about their lifestyle, symptoms, health needs and concerns. Their answers address routine questions normally asked during hospital consultations and the information collected can identify any relevant health concerns.

The tool drives the collection of data and information from patients back to their clinician, without the need for them to come into hospital. This means patients can be reassured that their health is still being monitored in between appointments. It also means, when they do see their clinician, they know that all records and information about their condition are already up to date so they can immediately begin a more meaningful discussion about their condition.

The aim is to provide vital validated information which can help clinicians further engage with patients with long-term neurological conditions, such as MS, acute headaches and epilepsy. In addition, the information provided will generate a personalised digital care plan for each patient which adheres to national guidance

The introduction of an online patient portal for patients to use in this way will not only empower people to manage their own health and engage with healthcare providers, but will mean they can have a more meaningful face-to-face consultation with clinicians when visiting hospital.
