Closure of M62 motorway over two weekends in September

29 August 2024

Drivers are being reminded that a major section of the M62 will shut for two weekends next month which will affect travel to and from our hospitals and community clinics for colleagues and service users.

Network Rail is replacing Castleton bridge near Rochdale that takes trains over the motorway. The project involves demolishing the current structure and installing a new bridge.

During this essential work, the M62 eastbound junctions 18 to 20, and M62 westbound junctions 20 to 19, will be shut from:

  • 9pm Friday 6 to 6am Monday 9 September
  • 9pm Friday 20 to 6am Monday 23 September

Motorists should avoid the area if possible as considerable delays are expected. If possible, delay your trip or find another route.

For drivers using the M62 during either weekend, please follow the clearly signed diversion (see below for diversions) and do not follow your satnav.

The railway will be closed from 6 September until the early morning of 25 September between Manchester Victoria and Rochdale.

Rail replacement buses will be in operation. Passengers are advised to check their travel in advance as journey times will be significantly longer than usual.
