New endoscopy unit in Oldham helps to speed up diagnosis for patients

6 December 2024

A new endoscopy unit fitted with the latest diagnostic testing equipment has opened helping to speed up diagnoses for cancer patients.

The unit is an extension to the Oldham Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) which is located at Salmon Fields, a short distance from The Royal Oldham Hospital.

The new purpose-built facility will allow the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) to offer more endoscopy procedures a year, helping to speed up diagnosis and then treatment for patients.

Jude Adams, NCA chief delivery officer, said: “We are delighted that our new unit is now open, creating that all important additional capacity for our endoscopy services in the local area and helping us to meet national NHS targets. The unit has three endoscopy rooms and will allow us to streamline the number of testing pathways, aiding with early diagnosis.

“Since the CDC opened almost two years ago, it has seen great success in providing rapid testing in the heart of the community as well as giving us the ability to offer patients multiple tests in one visit if needed. Thank you to all our colleagues who have worked incredibly hard to get the unit up and running.”

The endoscopy unit has state-of-the-art consultation rooms designed to deliver one stop clinics that will offer faster diagnoses that will help improve the patient journey.

Appointments to endoscopy are by referral only.

What is endoscopy?

It is a procedure which through the use of a specialised medical camera allows various patient internal examinations to take place, notably gastroscopy and colonoscopy.  The new centre will offer multiple diagnostic suites within which medical specialists can utilise highly technical cameras to perform the required internal investigations of patients displaying symptoms causing concern.
