The Oldham Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) endoscopy unit extension is almost complete.
When it opens, it will offer an additional 10,000 endoscopy procedures a year, giving a much-needed capacity boost to diagnose illnesses such as cancer faster.
Endoscopy is a procedure which through the use of a specialised medical camera allows various patient internal examinations to take place, notably gastroscopy and colonoscopy. The new centre will offer multiple diagnostic suites within which medical specialists can utilise highly technical cameras to perform the required internal investigations of patients displaying symptoms causing concern.
We took one of our NCA patients Bill for a tour ahead of completion. He said: “The unit is far more extensive than I had anticipated. There is lots of space and it clearly looks like a great deal of thought has been put into developing this light and airy unit that already has a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. During my visit I was told that the unit will be fitted with the latest high tech diagnostic devices, a great addition to the local NHS facilities in the area, helping patients like myself get appointments sooner,
“On a more mundane level, an issue I know is a common concern for many patients and accompanying relatives, car parking is provided and it is free.”
The closeness of the two diagnostic units is no accident. They will work in close co-operation, allowing patients to utilise the extensive facilities of both, if required, on the same visit.
