Salford Royal consultant, Professor Ibi Erekosima, has been awarded the clinical excellence accolade by the Black Healthcare Awards.
This new award has been driven by the Caribbean and African Health Network with the aim of celebrating the role black health and care workers play in the NHS through their skills, dedication, and energy.
Professor Erekosima is a renal physician at Salford Royal and gives medical support to satellite haemodialysis units in Rochdale and Oldham. He is also an Honorary lecturer/Senior clinical teaching fellow at The University of Manchester and visiting Professor of Medicine and Medical Education to the University of Port Harcourt Medical School in Nigeria.
Professor Erekosima said: “It was an honour and privilege to be shortlisted and then chosen as the winner of the Clinical Excellence Award. It is truly a humbling experience and an amazing evening to remember for me and my family. Thanks to CAHN and the judges for recognising my contribution to supporting healthcare in the UK and globally.”
He has been key to Salford Royal’s success as one of just six UK centres to be appointed to the International Society of Nephrology Sister Renal Centre scheme, supporting and educating staff at the renal unit of the University Hospital, Port Harcourt Medical School, and stimulating research activity there. He has previously been awarded the Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) UK in recognition of his strategic influence as a medical educational leader in the UK and internationally.

2022: He was recognised by NCA's Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Network for his contribution to medical research and education, fighting health inequality and promoting global health.
