Dr. Sorrel Burden has been awarded the prestigious Research Award for her contributions to nutritional research at the 40th-anniversary awards ceremony of the Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition group of the British Dietetic Association (BDA). In addition to this honour, Dr. Burden was also named the overall winner across all four pillars of dietetic practice: education, clinical, research, and leadership.
Dr. Burden’s work has significantly impacted clinical dietetics, focusing on key areas such as home parenteral nutrition, preoperative nutritional support, and tackling malnutrition. Her research has helped advance the evidence base for dietetic practice, with recognition for its practical application in improving patient outcomes. The overall award acknowledged not only her innovative research but also her broader influence in advancing the dietetic profession.
Professor Simon Lal, a longtime colleague of Dr. Burden, praised her achievements: "Congratulations to Sorrel on her well-deserved national awards, which not only recognise her research achievements but also her drive and commitment to leading the national dietetic community forward within Education and Clinical Practice. It’s been an honour working with Sorrel over the last decade; her research output has been a key contributor in promoting Salford’s Intestinal Failure Unit’s academic profile on the international stage."
The dual awards reflect Dr. Burden’s leadership in the field, as she continues to elevate both the clinical and academic standing of dietetics in the NCA, the UK and abroad. Her work is celebrated not just for advancing the science of nutrition, but for its direct impact on healthcare, demonstrating the vital role of dietitians in clinical settings and beyond.
