Standardisation of outpatient appointment letters

15 July 2024

As part of the NCA wide Outpatient Excellence Programme, we will be launching some new standardised outpatient appointment letter templates starting from 15 July 2024.

This initiative aims to enhance our service delivery and improve patient experience.

Why standardisation matters:

  • Reduce missed appointments (DNA): Clearer communication leads to better patient understanding, helping to reduce missed appointments.
  • Eliminate unwanted variation: Consistency in letters ensures uniformity and prevents confusion.
  • Enhance patient experience: Streamlined, clear letters provide a better patient journey from start to finish.
  • Improve communication: More precise and comprehensive letters improve overall patient and staff communication.
  • Reduce health inequalities for patients: Signposting them to better communication tools where required.
  • Easier process for staff booking appointments: less time spent contacting and clarifying details with patients and lower number of codes/letters to consider when booking appointments
