The MacMillan Acute Oncology Service are a team of health care professionals. The team includes Nurses, Consultant Oncologists and Coordinators who are involved in the management and care of oncology patients admitted to our trust at all 4 clinical sites. Our main aim is to ensure high quality care is provided to all oncology patients, ensuring good communication with the Christie NHS Foundation Trust and the wider community including the Palliative Care Services, Hospice Teams, District Nursing teams and GP practices.
The CUP/MUO (Cancer of Unknown Primary / Metastases of Unknown Origin) assessment service is delivered by the Acute Oncology Nursing team / Consultants and provides specialist inpatient/outpatient oncology support and advice to clinical teams, patients, and carers.
We are here to provide telephone advice, ward reviews and education for health care professionals. We work closely with the trust’s palliative care teams, The Christie at Oldham radiotherapy team, and the Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression team. We also provide telephone support and signposting to our patients and carers.
Our Acute Oncology Coordinators are the frontline to the service, managing the patient referrals, answering the telephone, and offering full clerical support to our Nurses to enable them to fully focus on patient care.
The Acute Oncology Nurses review patients admitted acutely with a complication arising directly from the cancer or from the cancer treatment and new inpatient diagnoses, we also provide information regarding prognosis and ceilings of care.
When a referral for an inpatient episode is received, the acute oncology team will endeavour to assess the patient within 24 hours, or by next working day, and will contact the clinical team to discuss.
