We provide assessment and treatment for children aged 0-16 years with developmental, congenital, and musculoskeletal conditions. We receive referrals from Paediatricians, Orthopaedic Surgeons, and A&E.
The Physiotherapist will carry out an assessment. Once the assessment is complete the therapist will discuss the findings with the child and their relevant adult/s and agree what we all want the child to gain from therapy (goals to work toward). A treatment plan will then be developed, and a follow up appointment arranged. In some cases only one appointment is necessary.
The initial appointment will last up to one hour. Follow up appointments may be shorter.
Children are usually seen face to face, but there is the option of video or telephone appointments where appropriate.
Children should wear or bring appropriate clothing (e.g., shorts and T-Shirt) or we may not be able to carry out a full assessment. We also require children to be in their bare feet at times during Physiotherapy assessments.
The assessment will include questions about the child’s developmental, medical, and social history, as well as their current condition. The therapist will ask about the child’s and their parent’s or carer’s concerns and expectations.
Following assessment, a plan will be made which may include:
A programme of exercises and activities aimed at promoting development or recovery, to be carried out at home.
Referral to other services e.g. Occupational therapy, Orthotics, Posture and Mobility Centre.
If the need for longer term Physiotherapy input is identified, children may be referred to the Community Paediatric Physiotherapy team, at Bury Living Well Centre.
Sometimes a one-off assessment and advice is all that is required.
