Signs a patient might be struggling when eating and drinking

  • Coughing or choking when eating or drinking
  • Bringing food back up, sometimes through the nose
  • A sensation that food is stuck in their throat or chest
  • Persistent drooling of saliva
  • Being unable to chew food properly

Alert a member of the nursing team if a patient is struggling when eating or drinking.
