It was truly an honour to spend three weeks as part of the Intestinal Failure Unit (IFU) team at the Northern Care Alliance, Salford Royal Hospital, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom. Every member of the team exemplifies excellence and embodies the spirit of a multidisciplinary team. Their willingness to educate, involve, and support me was remarkable, ensuring I felt both included and comfortable throughout my time there. I must extend special thanks to IFU consultant dietitian, my supervisor, for meticulously organizing a diverse and enriching schedule, exposing me to a wide array of cases and keeping me actively engaged.
I am also grateful to the IFU lead nurse for broadening my perspective by showcasing aspects of patient care beyond nutrition, offering me a more holistic understanding. My heartfelt appreciation goes to the entire team, as each person contributed uniquely to making my experience not only enjoyable but incredibly valuable. This was a truly exceptional learning opportunity, and I hope to have the privilege of returning in the future.

Mr Stephan Haas, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology - Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden
Medical Observership
The observership was outstanding, and I had ample opportunity to gain a thorough insight into the management of patients with intestinal failure. In addition to attending medical rounds and accompanying the surgical placement of central venous lines, individual face-to-face meetings were arranged with nurses, dietitians, the IF data manager, the IF business manager, an IF pharmacist, surgeons, and gastroenterologists. Each representative exemplified the highest standards of this IF reference centre, and I received numerous suggestions for the further development of our IF centre in Sweden.

I want to express my sincere gratitude for the invaluable insights and knowledge I gained throughout the session at the H8 ward, at Salford. The information shared about the various aspects of TPN, intestinal failure, and surgical procedures related to the small intestine was both informative and relevant to our practice. What made this training truly unique, however was the opportunity to hear firsthand from a patient who consented to share his experiences after a car accident that resulted in him requiring TPN. This powerful account reinforced the importance of empathy and compassion in our profession. This knowledge will undoubtedly have a positive impact on my nursing career. Your dedication to excellence in patient care is truly inspiring.

The team were very welcoming and informative. They provided me with learning resources and made my visit to the ward interesting and informative. All staff are very knowledgeable and highly skilled. I particularly enjoyed learning about what the outreach team do during their day-to-day and how passionate the ward manager was about intestinal failure. Patients were happy to talk to me about their journey and their stay as inpatients on H8. Overall, an interesting learning experience.

Nursing Observership
Thank you for taking the time and effort to allow me to gain insight into the Intestinal Failure Unit. It was great to get the chance to observe the running of the unit, as well as learn more about the different types of intestinal failure and the way in which these are managed. It was interesting to spend time with the outreach team, and found this to be particularly useful as we communicate a lot with the outreach team in our Transcare nurse role. In addition to this we had the opportunity to observe the removal of a Hickman line which I found to be really beneficial to my learning.

I had an absolutely fantastic day on the IFU!
Everyone was really welcoming and friendly. The patients I met on the day spoke very highly of the staff that cared for them. I also felt the unit had a really relaxed feel to it- although the staff were busy they did not come across as stressed/overwhelmed and that is so important for patient experience.

I truly enjoyed my stay. Everyone was open and welcoming, and the department arranged a schedule tailored to my wishes. This gave me the opportunity to see many aspects of the unit, including ward rounds, clinics, the nutritional support team and follow an outgoing nurse in the patients' home. Further, I engaged with ongoing research in the department, acquired new skills in QI macros, had feedback on my own ongoing research, and became a part of a new quality improvement research project in the department.

During my month-long stay, I had the opportunity to observe how you guys manage patients in their specialized unit, your approach to patients with intestinal failure both enteral and parenteral-wise. I also had the opportunity to visit patient at home who were on parenteral nutrition support and learn about your system, including remote discharge in cooperation with nearby oncology hospital. This opened up a whole new experience to me, and I am very grateful for this opportunity. I will bring what I have learned to develop a better system and treat patients more efficiently.
