MSK Physiotherapy - Heywood, Middleton, Rochdale (HMR) Community

We are a team of qualified physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants and extended scope practitioners who provide assessment, diagnosis, advice, and treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions.

We provide Physiotherapy intervention for individuals ages 16 and over who are registered to a GP in Heywood, Middleton, and Rochdale.

Our services are available Monday-Friday between 8am-7pm and our admin services are open between 8am-4pm.

Your Physiotherapist will suggest the best treatment plan for you based on your assessment.

This may include:

  • Home exercise plans.
  • Advice and education surrounding your condition and symptoms.
  • Gym based exercise sessions.
  • Individualised rehabilitation programmes.
  • Group based rehabilitation classes: early ankle, early lower limb, advanced lower limb, shoulder, Osteoarthritis, total knee replacement, Graded Exercise and Ladies groups.
  • Post-surgical and fracture rehabilitation.
  • Mobility assessments.
  • Balance and proprioception training.
  • Acupuncture (at some sites).
  • Provision of walking aids.
  • Forward referrals onto other services.
  • Injection therapy.

Some treatments are restricted to specific areas, clinics, and physiotherapists.

Before your appointment...

To make your appointment run as smooth as possible please:

  • Let us know if English is not your preferred or first language. We can arrange for an interpreter to attend your appointment. Please give a minimum of 48 hours’ notice, to allow for us to arrange this for you. We use qualified interpreters to ensure best possible care. We are not able to use family members to interpret for you.
  • If you are attending the appointment via ambulance transport, then please contact us to arrange this and a suitable appointment time.
  • Please give the department minimum of 24 hours’ notice if you are unable to attend your appointment. This will allow us help someone else on our waiting list. If you fail to do this, you will be placed on a list for 4 weeks. If you then do not contact our service in that time, you will be discharged from the service and will have to seek a new referral.

What to wear and bring to your session?

  • Please bring a list of your medications.
  • Please bring any tests or scans that you have had done privately.
  • Your physiotherapist may ask you to remove items of clothing such as shirt, blouse, or trousers, to allow full assessment of the affected area. If you have a lower limb problem, you may wish to bring shorts to change into and if you have an upper limb or spinal problem you may wish to wear a vest.

What will happen on initial and follow up appointments?

Please attend 5-10 minutes prior to your first appointment time, this is to allow time to fill in some short questionnaires.

Most first appointments will involve a face-to-face session lasting around 40 minutes, however in certain circumstances we may carry out this assessment over the phone. The therapist will ask questions around your condition, symptoms, and personal details. This help build up a clinical picture, allowing them to create individualised care plans, with yourself. This may also involve a physical assessment of the affected and surrounding area. Please see below for information on what to wear and bring.

Please bring a list of any medicines that you take.

Most follow up sessions will involve a face-to-face session lasting around 20 minutes. The department has a strict appointment timetable, so please be on time for your appointment, as it will limit the time you are seen, or we may not be able to late arrivals.

What to expect

If it is thought that physiotherapy is appropriate for you then the appropriate course of treatment will be offered.

It is highly likely that the treatment will involve an individualised home exercise plan. It is important that you are willing to do these at home as directed by your physiotherapist if you wish to see an effective long-term benefit from your physiotherapy sessions.

Your Physiotherapist will also provide you with evidence-based education and advice about your condition and how best to manage this. This may include diet and lifestyle advice.

You may be signposted or referred onto further services.

How many sessions do I need and how often?

Each patient has individual needs and different conditions; therefore, this is a decision made between yourself and your physiotherapist. During your initial assessment and following sessions, yourself and therapist will decide on a treatment plan and will indicate approximately how many sessions are needed. This typically involves advice, education, and strategies to help you self- manage and improve your problem.

Will physiotherapy hurt?

Please remember the physiotherapists aim is not to increase your pain, so please if you experience this during your treatment let us know. After the assessment and some treatments, you may feel short term discomfort which should settle quickly. If the discomfort does not settle within 2 days, please contact the department for advice.

Parking for patients is available on site, however spaces can be limited. Please give yourself adequate amount of time to park and ensure you are parked an allocated space.

Patient’s under the care of a consultant or who are seen within emergency departments may be referred for Physiotherapy intervention. 

Those referred via self-referral or GP will be seen at one of our community sites.
