Oldham school nursing 5-19 Universal Health Service works with children and young people aged 5-19 years and their parents and carers. This is inclusive of individuals who attend a school in Oldham and are home educated living in Oldham. Providing expert health information, advice, support, assessments, and interventions based on the Healthy Child Programme. Ensuring they experience the very best health and wellbeing advice enabling them to reach their full potential.
The school nursing team operates as a mix skill set providing a wide range of health and wellbeing advice and support. This includes health promotion, immunisations, health advice and assessments. We work closely with other agencies which allows us to signpost to the most appropriate services.
We also provide support for parents, carers, and education staff, ensuring effective partnerships and following a whole team approach.
A range of professionals make up the school nursing service. This includes specialists in public health nursing, qualified staff nurses, school nursing assistant practitioners and healthcare support workers.
We offer confidential advice in a variety of settings, which includes within the home, school, and community venues. We can support young people one to one or within a family setting to support with emotional health and wellbeing packages of care, for example support with anger issues, anxiety, and specific support with physical health needs e.g., Bedwetting, nutrition, and medical conditions in school.
Support within education settings
We deliver bespoke training to schools to support children with specific health needs participate in everyday school life, for example managing asthma and anaphylaxis.
We work within schools to manage public health messages, such as healthy eating, oral health, stop smoking and healthy relationships.
School Nurse Immunisation Team
The Immunisation Team lead on the delivery of immunisations for secondary school aged children and young people across Oldham. These will be offered as per the national schedule.
The team deliver immunisation sessions in school and in clinic. Where appropriate we can offer to carry out immunisations in the home setting.

The school nursing team offer an anonymous text messaging service – ChatHealth, for parents and 11-19 years old.
ChatHealth provides a safe way for parents and young people to anonymously text a qualified school nurse, allowing evidence-based health and wellbeing advice to be sought in a safe, discreet, and confidential way.
ChatHealth is available 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and is not an emergency service.
