This service provides acute care (including Thrombolysis) for patients who have suffered a stroke, treatment and investigations for Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) and also inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation. This service is one of three Hyper acute units in Greater Manchester and is part of the integrated stroke network (ISDN) and has links with all Stroke units across Greater Manchester.
Patients who have had a stroke will be admitted to the Primary Stroke Centre (PSC) where care is provided by a multi-disciplinary team and led by Dr Kawafi the Clinical lead.
The Team is able to offer rapid assessment and early diagnosis following a suspected stroke and this means that patients receive the right treatment as quickly as possible, which can help speed up recovery.
A “clot busting” Thrombolysis service is offered at Fairfield General Hospital for all Patients eligible to receive the treatment. The service also provides the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of transient ischaemic attacks (TIA) using techniques such as CT and Ultrasound.
As soon as possible inpatient rehabilitation will be delivered (where needed) by the Multidisciplinary team.
As of September 2013 all acute stroke patients are now brought to Fairfield General Hospital where they will be assessed by the stroke team. Following their ‘acute’ phase patients will be transferred to either an Early Supportive Discharge Team or to an inpatient stroke rehabilitation ward.
Acute stroke services are provided from Fairfield General Hospital.
Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation Stroke Services are provided from Fairfield General Hospital for Bury, Rochdale and North Manchester patients and from the Royal Oldham Hospital for Oldham patients.
Outpatient services are available from each hospital site.
