Oldham – Colorectal Surgery
Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) is a programme that aims to better equip you and your family to prepare and recover from major surgery. The programme was implemented at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) in 2014, and has since been applied to 6 further hospitals in Greater Manchester.
Post-operative Pulmonary Complications (PPC) can affect up to 30% of patients following major surgery. PPC can lead to increased length of stay in hospital and reduced life expectancy for up to 3 years after surgery. ERAS+ aims to reduce PPCs using specific prehabilitation and rehabilitation techniques such as incentive spirometry. Read more about the average length of hospital stays.
ERAS+ is a program developed by a team of NHS professionals to support and guide you and your family in preparation for your surgery. The program provides information on how to prepare for surgery. Please watch this short 3 minute video (or see the video transcript) for an overview of what to expect and how to prepare. Then use the sections below for more information.
