Why is this investigation carried out?
The doctor would like to see what your blood pressure is during normal daily activity.
What do we look for in this investigation?
It is useful in the diagnosis and treatment of high or low blood pressure.
Are there any alternatives to this test?
There are no alternatives to this test. If you do not wish to have this test or have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the department on 0161 206 4746.
What you need to do to prepare for this investigation
It is advisable that you wear a short sleeve shirt/top. You will have to return the recorder promptly to the department the next day.
What will happen during the investigation?
During the test you will be asked to wear a blood pressure cuff around your arm. This cuff will be attached to a recorder which you will carry via a shoulder strap or belt.
At timed intervals the recorder will take your blood pressure, it will help if you keep your arm still whilst the cuff is inflated. You will not be able to have a bath or shower whilst you are wearing the monitor.
Limitations/risks of the investigation
When the cuff is inflated you may experience a pins and needles sensation in your arm, hand and fingers. Very occasionally, some patients do experience some slight bruising in the area around the cuff.
What happens to your results?
Once the recorder is returned to the department, the recordings will be analysed by the clinical physiologist. The results will be sent to the doctor who requested the investigation who will contact you at a later date.
When you attend for your next clinic appointment, your specialist will discuss the results with you and decide what, if any, treatment you will need. The clinical physiologist who performs your procedure is not permitted to give you results or discuss the meaning of the results with you.
