Colorectal - Macmillan Colorectal Cancer and Stoma Care Support Worker

What is the role of a Macmillan Colorectal Cancer and Stoma Care Support Worker?

Macmillan Colorectal Cancer and Stoma Care Support workers provide both emotional support and practical advice to help meet a person's individual needs.

As support workers we can help to co-ordinate patient’s care whilst providing support and signposting patients to a wide range of services that may be of benefit to you as individuals.

What services do we offer?

  • Holistic needs Assessments (concerns checklist)
  • Face to face and telephone assessments to continually provide emotional and psychological support throughout your treatment pathway
  • We also help to arrange and plan the Health and Wellbeing event

Stoma care

If you have a stoma post-surgery, we can provide practical stoma management, emotional and psychological support.

We also help arrange the stoma care support group.

How can we help you?

As a support worker we can provide information, advice and support to you and your family throughout your treatment pathway and through follow up.

All your concerns will be discussed with your Macmillan Colorectal Nurse Specialist to make sure you have the appropriate support, following which, a care plan will be created and shared with you and your GP.

We can if you need, arrange hospital transport for you to attend either an outpatient appointment or if you are attending to receive treatment.

We can signpost you to other services, such as the Macmillan Information Centre who can help with arranging free hospital parking.

We can also refer you for benefit or grant assessment.

We work as part of a large team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, dieticians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. We also communicate regularly with others involved in your care, for example your GP and District Nurse.
