What the terms mean

When checking blood results, the doctors and nurses are not only looking at 'what is normal for you', but also any trends in the blood results that might change gradually over time. These gradual 'trends' can be important as normal values.

Hb - Haemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells: low levels may show that you are anaemic

WBC - White blood cells are important for fightening infections

Neutrophils - A type of WPC that increases rapidly to fight infection

Platelets - Platelets are essentail for normal blood clotting

ALT/AST/Alk Phos - These show how your liver is working

Creatinine - This shows how your kidneys are working

This monitoring leaflet will be used to record instructions about your medication dose ad results of the blood test done to check that the medication is still safe for you to take.

Please bring it with you to all your hospital appointment and when you see your nurse, pharmacist, dentist or GP.
