This leaflet contains discharge advice following your attendance to the Accident & Emergency Department (A&E) or Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC).

The following advice will guide you through the next 6 weeks of your recovery.

Use the information below to gain a better understanding or your injury and what can be done to improve and maximise your recovery

Discharge advice

You have fractured the tip of your finger or thumb. This type of fracture heals well in most cases without any problems. Pain and tenderness from the injury will settle, this can take 6 weeks.

If you have been provided with finger strapping this can be removed after 2 to 3 weeks. It may take a month or two longer for full movement to return due to finger swelling.

To avoid stiffness, you must move your hand even if this means overcoming some of the discomfort and pain.

Most patients will have returned to work 3 weeks after the initial injury , but if you have a heavy manual job this might be 6 weeks after your injury.

If your symptoms fail to improve by 6 weeks please contact us using the fracture line.
