Welcome to Ward H1, the Medical High Care Unit at Salford Royal Hospital.
The Medical High Care Unit is an 8 bedded unit, providing specialist care and treatment to acutely unwell patients with complex care needs, additional monitoring and clinical input that cannot be provided outside of Critical Care.
We have a daily consultant ward round and you will be updated with your management plan following review.
If you have any questions, please ask your nurse or any staff members or alternatively, you can speak to the Ward Manager during working hours 7am - 3pm Monday to Friday. Out of hourse please speak with Nurse in Charge.
Personal items and hygiene
During your stay, we will try to encourage you to be as independent as you usually are at home. Our staff will assist you with activities that you need help with. Things to bring with you for your stay:
- Toiletries
- Day clothes (comfortable)
- Pyjamas
- Footwear (not sliders or slippers) with good grip
- Leisure activity - to occupy your time (books, puzzles etc.)
- Any regular medications you are taking at home
- Mobile Phone and Charger(if required)
- Contact number for Next of Kin
Please only bring essential items with you. We cannot accept responsibility for any valuables brought into hospital.
Please tell us if you have any hearing aids or dentures so we can appropriately store these at your bedside.
Infection control
Due to infection control precautions, the ward is not able to have any balloons, flowers or pot plants in the patients’ bed areas.
Photos/ Pictures need to be laminated so that they can be cleaned to prevent any infections. You may be asked to wear a mask if there are any infection precautions on the ward, this is at your discretion. Please be polite to staff if asked.

Enter through the main entrance from the Central Carpark or the front entrance of the Hope Building.
Visiting Times
We do ask for 2 visitors per bed area.
Afternoon 2pm – 5pm
Evening 7pm - 8pm
Open visiting is available for all patients with memory loss or dementia, palliative patients and under 18s.
All visitors are requested to use the visitors chair rather than sitting on the patients’ beds.
Children under 16 years old are not permitted onto the unit unless for exceptional circumstances.
Visiting for special circumstances must go through the Ward manager or Nurse in charge on the Unit.
Salford Royal Hospital is a non-smoking hospital, so smoking is not permitted on the premises. This includes vaping and electronic cigarettes.
Car Parking
The hospital has a main car park within the hospital grounds. Car parking prices are clearly displayed on the pay and display machines. The ward can provide a letter for a weekly car parking pass at a reduced fee. This is available from the ward co- ordinator upon request and is to be taken to the car parking services - near the reception area in the Hope Building.
Food, Nutrition and Mealtimes
Protected Mealtimes
We operate a protected meal time policy. This is to ensure that our patients have an uninterrupted time when they can eat.
Visitors are asked not to visit during these times, unless they are carers to help the patient eat.
Breakfast 8am - 9am
Lunch 12 noon - 1pm
Evening Meal - 5pm - 6pm
Drinks are provided throughout the day as well as with meals.
Each morning, we collect menu choices for all patients. We cater for specialised dietary requirements and the hospital employs registered dietitians to meet specific dietary needs.
Visitor facilities
There is a restaurant where you are able to buy hot food and refreshments. There is one located on the 1st floor of the Hope building, and the other on the ground floor near outpatient department.
Visitors toilets - The nearest visitor toilets are located on the 1st floor near the reception area in the Hope Building.
Spiritual Care
Spiritual Care Team Chaplains are available from different denominations and faiths and are supported by a team of volunteers.
You can see a chaplain at any time and the nursing team can arrange this for you.
There is a Christian chapel on the 3rd floor of the Hope Building and is available to all who wish to pray or be quiet.
There is also a prayer room with a women’s area (which is regularly used for Muslim prayers) and a Shabbos room.
These facilities are all open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Compliments, concerns and complaints
A positive patient experience is very important to all the staff.
If you have any concerns or feel your care is unsafe on MHCU, please feel free ask to speak to your nurse, nurse in charge or ward manager.
