What is endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)?
Endoscopic ultrasound is a type of endoscopy that utilises an ultrasound scanner. This allows medical imaging deep within your body, from the oesophagus or stomach. Prior to performing endoscopic ultrasound, your doctor may also opt to perform gastroscopy, which gives better images of the lining of your stomach and oesophagus.
The Preparation
To allow a clear view, the stomach must be empty. You will therefore be asked not to have anything to eat or drink for at least 6 hours before the procedure.
EUS lasts longer than a normal gastroscopy, so for this procedure you will need to have sedation, and you will have to stay for up to 2 hours after the procedure has been completed.
You are not permitted to drive afterwards and will require an escort and transport home. The effects of sedation can last up to 24 hours.
During this period, you should NOT
- Drive a car
- Operate machinery
- Drink Alcohol
- Sign any legally binding documents
After sedation you need a responsible person to stay with you for a minimum of 12 hours. Please note this may mean overnight.
If you take Wafarin, Sinthrome, Clopidogrel (Plavix) or any other anticoagulation (blood thinner) please contact the unit for advice as soon as possible.
Risks
EUS can result in complications such as reaction to medication, perforation (tear) of the stomach or oesophagus and bleeding, but these complications are rare. They may require treatment, and even an operation. Be sure to inform us if you have any unusual pain following the procedure.
Alternatives
There are alternative scanning modalities, such as CT and MRI scans, but for certain indications, endoscopic ultrasound is preferable. This can be discussed with your endoscopist.
What if I decide not to have the procedure?
This is your right to refuse. The doctor will not be able to obtain as much information about your condition and how best to treat you. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Endoscopy Unit on 0161 206 4720/0161 206 5958 or 0161 206
5959.
