B2 is a general surgery ward, based on the first floor of the Irving Building at Salford Royal Hospital.
B2 has 18 male beds – this includes two bays, each with seven beds and four single side rooms. 24-hour nursing care is provided by our ward staff.
B2 provides inpatient care for both emergency admissions and elective surgical patients. We care for patients under a range of specialities and work with members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team to ensure the highest standards of care.
The main aim of the ward is to help patients to recover safely from surgical procedures and various medical interventions. We want to ensure that we help you get back to your usual functional baseline and therefore enable your safe discharge back to your permanent place of residence. If a longer period of rehabilitation is identified, we may refer you to an intermediate care unit in the community – if you are not a Salford resident you will be referred to an intermediate care unit in your own area of residence. This will be discussed with you or family/care provider by the staff on the ward.

As your care provider
We aim to provide the right care at the right time to ensure that your needs are met.
We will discuss and agree any equipment/support needs you may have.
We will fully involve you in planning your discharge, together with a relative, care or friend as appropriate.
When your treatment is complete it is important that your discharge is not delayed.
As a patient
Please arrange everyday/outdoor clothes of your own (we aim to have patients dressed in their own clothes where appropriate) and toiletries for your time with us.
You will need to arrange your own transport home where possible.
Please let your next of kin know you are going home. If you are unable to contact them, let the nurse know who is providing your care.
Please let us know if you need a medical certificate (sick note).
Infection Control
Due to infection control precautions, the ward is unable to have any flowers or pot plants at the patient’s bedside. We also advise that any photos, pictures, or letters are laminated so that they can be cleaned to prevent any infections.
Medication
Your medication will be provided on discharge, but this will be a limited supply. You will need to contact your GP in the usual manner to arrange a repeat prescription.
We will discuss your medication with you prior to discharge. Please do not be afraid to ask about any changes to your medication.
Following discharge, if you have any questions about your medication, please discuss with your GP or community Pharmacist.
Visiting Times
B2 allows visitors between 12-8pm. However, we do ask visitors to respect protected mealtimes. We request that each patient has 2 visitors per bedside due to restrictions on space around the bed areas.
Protected Mealtimes
Breakfast – served between 7.30am and 9am
Lunch – served between 12.30pm and 1.30pm
Dinner – served between 5.30pm and 6.30pm
Each morning, we collect menu choices for all inpatients. We cater for specialised dietary requirements and the hospital employs registered Dietitians to meet specific dietary needs.
Non-smoking Trust
Please be aware that the Northern Care Alliance is a non-smoking Trust. Please speak to your GP or pre-op nurse prior to admission as it may be helpful for you to obtain Nicotine Replacement Patches. We can also refer you to Smoking Cessation on your admission.
Quality of Care
It is important to the surgical team, doctors, nurses, and support staff that the care you receive is of the highest quality and is delivered in a professional manner, in a clean and safe environment.
If you or your family have any concerns, they should be referred to B2 Ward Manager, Kay Battersby. Alternatively, you can contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) either directly or through the nursing staff.
Discharge
Prior to your discharge day, please discuss any concerns you have about your discharge with your nurse or medical team so that they can ensure all questions are answered to your satisfaction.
Please ensure you have any prescribed medications, a sickness certificate (if required) and a copy of your Discharge Summary.
As a ward, we value patient feedback to support improvements on the ward. We have a patient comments book on the ward, and you will be sent a Friends and Family survey by text.
