Inhalation sedation is a way of making dental care more pleasant for nervous patients. It is different from ‘gas’. Patients stay awake but are very relaxed during treatment.
As agreed with you, we will use inhalation sedation at your next visit and here are some simple instructions which we would like you to follow carefully before and after treatment.
Before the Visit
- You can eat a small meal and drink normally before the appointment
- Please bring to the visit any tablets, medicines, inhalers you are taking and let us know if there have been any changes to your medications or medical history. All medications should be taken as normal unless otherwise stated by your dentist
- Do not smoke or consume alcohol 24 hours before your appointment
- Do not use recreational drugs 48 hours before your appointment
- Please remove any make up products e.g. lip gloss, foundation etc from around your nose and lips. Remove any piercings from the mouth or face
- If you have a cold and/or a blocked nose, please cancel your appointment and we will re-arrange it
- You do not need to be accompanied by a responsible adult (escort) unless stated by the dental team. Do not bring any children to the appointment or persons dependant upon your care
- The use of mobile devices will not be allowed while in the treatment rooms
- You may drive to your appointment, however, leave ample time for treatment and recovery. We may ask you to wait at least 20 minutes (or longer if you are not fully recovered) in the waiting area before driving a car. If you do plan to drive, you must inform your insurance company prior to the appointment. Alternatively, you may prefer to be chaperoned or use public transport or taxi
You must inform your dentist if you are trying to conceive or are pregnant. If you are pregnant, it will not be safe to proceed with the sedation and your appointment will have to be postponed.
After the visit
- You will remain in the dental room until you are fully recovered or asked to take a seat in the waiting area for up to 20 minutes (or longer for full recovery)
- You may take any medication as normal
- You may return to work
- For the remainder of the day, avoid any dangerous tasks or operating machinery
You will be advised on what treatment you have received and how long before you are able to eat and drink.

Consent
By law, we must obtain your written consent for any procedure to be undertaken with inhalation sedation. Staff will explain the risks and benefits and alternatives with you before they ask you to sign the consent form. You will be offered a copy of the consent form to take home with you. If you are unsure about any aspect of your treatment, please do not hesitate to ask questions.
You must confirm your consent for the procedure before the treatment starts.
Occasionally, due to unexpected findings during you sedation appointment, the nature of dental treatment able to be provided may need to change. You will be unable to make important decisions about your treatment whilst under the sedative. We will inform you at the treatment visit and discuss these with you at the end of the appointment.
