Follow the plate model for guidance on making sure blended meals are complete for all the nutrients.
- Energy/carbohydrate rich food at each meal
- Protein rich foods twice daily
- Milk and dairy rich food three times each day
- Fruit and vegetables five portions daily
For portion sizes
- Aim for 1/3 protein/carbohydrates/vegetables. If less energy/ calories needed, give more vegetables eg ½ and ¼ of protein/ carbohydrate. If more energy/ calories needed, fortify with more protein and energy rich foods
- Mobility will affect how much nourishment an individual requires. Children need a certain amount to grow, but this may be reduced if mobility is lower. Adults may need enough nourishment for weight gain. Again, if mobility is lower, their needs may also be lower
- Portion size will also depend on what the individual tolerates
- The dietitian will calculate individual nutritional requirements and provide guidance

Allergies
If an individual has never had any food by mouth, it may be unclear whether they have any food allergies. We recommend starting any allergens in small amounts, and leaving 3 days before introducing any other new food. This allows monitoring for any potential symptoms. Offer early in the day and when the individual is well.
Please speak to your Dietitian if you suspect an allergy.
Some common foods which may cause an allergic reaction include: Milk, Egg, Fish, Nuts, Wheat, Soya, Sesame.
