What is palliative care?
Palliative care describes the use of treatment, care and support for people with life-limiting illness and their loved ones. It is sometimes referred to as ‘supportive care’.
The aim of palliative care is to help you to have a good quality of life – It can involve:
- Managing physical symptoms such as pain
- Emotional, spiritual and psychological support
- Social care, including help with things like washing, dressing or eating
- Support for your family and friends
Who provides palliative care?
General palliative care in the community is provided by:
- General Practioners (GP)
- District Nurses
- Care home staff
- Allied health professionals such as an occupational therapist and physiotherapists
- Social workers
- Mental health professionals
- Chaplaincy team/faith leaders
These teams work together to provide a holistic (whole person) assessment. This identifies what support you may need to meet your physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs, from all services, to include advice on your symptoms and practical nursing care.
Many patients with life limiting illnesses are well supported by the generalist services, but sometimes you may require more specialist help during your illness and may therefore benefit from additional support. If so, you may be referred for Specialist Palliative Care.
What is Specialist Palliative Care?
Specialist palliative care is delivered by professionals who are specially trained to deliver palliative care for complex symptoms, emotional and psychological well-being and difficult social issues.
They share their specialist knowledge and skills and act as a resource to the community teams including GPs and other services to advise and educate them on advances in care.
You may be referred to the team for:
- Pain and symptom control
- Emotional and psychological support for you and your loved ones
- Supportive rehabilitation to maintain mobility, home activities and safety
- Understanding your illness and treatment
- For support with planning your future care
- Referral to additional support services if required to help with benefits/healthy lifestyle advice/employment support etc
