Who are we?
The Children’s Epilepsy Service is part of the Children’s Community Team and provides Epilepsy education and support for children, young people and their families aged 0 to 18 years.
Children’s Epilepsy Service
Your child has been referred to the community-based epilepsy nurses by another health professional. This may be your Consultant, GP, School Health Advisor or Health Visitor.
We work with children aged 0 to 18 years or up to the age of 19 for children with additional needs who have a confirmed epilepsy diagnosis.
We assess, provide advice, and give information to support you and your child with their diagnosis.
An important aspect of our role is to spend time with you and your child to offer specialist advice and explain specific issues.
We provide information and support on all aspects of Epilepsy including:
- What happens during a seizure and the first aid required
- When to seek medical advice and when to call an ambulance
- Recognising different seizure types
- Information on medication
- Possible implications of epilepsy on lifestyle, safety, and education
- Signposting you to other national organisations and sources of support
- We provide up-to-date literature on all aspects of epilepsy
- We attend seizure clinics at Royal Oldham Hospital and Neurology clinics at Werneth Primary Care Centre
- We liaise closely with your Consultant and other professionals involved in your child’s care
- With your consent the Epilepsy Nurses will liaise with your child’s nursery or school. We provide care plans for schools and training in seizures, first aid and the administration of rescue medication if prescribed
