Integrated & Community Services - Community Dental Service (CDS)

Introduction

Salford Community Dental Service provides treatment for children and adults on referral from their own dentist or non- dental health professional. We provide treatment under sedation, general anaesthetic and domiciliary services.

  • A single course of dental treatment, following which they will be discharged to a GDP. This is for children requiring sedation or GA for their dental treatment
  • Shared Care: a GDP will provide routine examination and prevention advice and refer to Special Care Dental Services for treatment that is outside of their competency. When this treatment is complete the patient will be discharged to the GDP for ongoing care
  • Continuing care within the Special Care Dental Service
  • Domiciliary Care – This will only be offered on a limited basis and is likely to be for an examination only. To ensure patient safety all attempts must be made to arrange to transport patients to one of our community clinics for any treatment required. This includes provision of dentures

Indications for referral to Special Care adults and children dental service

  • Complex medical history including dementia with co- morbidities
  • Insufficient co-operation for operative dentistry, due to their medical, cognitive or physical impairment, therefore requiring sedation/GA
  • Patients with moderate/severe learning disabilities or dementia who are not compliant for dental treatment within primary care and need significant support to accept examination and treatment
  • Patients with severe physical, neurological and/or movement disabilities (e.g., cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease), where treatment is not possible in primary care
  • Patients requiring specialised equipment to transfer to the dental chair e.g., hoist, wheelchair recliner
  • Patients requiring hospital transport to access dental facilities (to be organised by patient/carers)
  • Patients with diagnosed mental health conditions who need significant support to accept examination and treatment
  • Patients who require assessment on a domiciliary basis (eligibility criteria apply).
