Integrated & Community Services - Low Vision Clinic - Community Eye Service

What is a low vision assessment?

The purpose of a low vision aid assessment is to find the best way of using the vision of someone whose sight cannot be improved by medical treatment or glasses.

How do I make an appointment?

If you are registered with a Bury G.P. you may refer yourself for a low vision assessment by calling 0300 323 3316.

Where is the clinic held?

  • Radcliffe Primary Care Centre
  • Bury Society for Blind and Partially Sighted People

What do I bring to the assessment?

Always bring your glasses, even if you find them of little or no use, together with any magnifier that you use or have been given in the past. It is a good idea to bring along examples of tasks that you are having difficulty with. This may be a particular size of print or an activity such as sewing or knitting.

What happens during the visit?

A Specialist Orthoptist will assess you and discuss your poor sight with you. After testing he/she will suggest ways to improve your ability to read, write and undertake other activities with which you may be having difficulty.

If magnifying devices of some kind are found to be helpful, you will be shown the best way to use them and then they will be loaned to you for use at home.

Can I come back again?

You can contact the service for advice or to book a further appointment if required.

What do we ask from you?

Please ensure that you have visited your optician before the assessment as this may influence the outcome.

Please give as much notice as possible if you need to cancel an appointment.

Is there a charge?

There is no charge for the assessment or any aids we issue to you provided you are a registered NHS patient.
