Ward L1 is an Acute Rehabilitation Unit, providing specialist rehabilitation management for patients from across Greater Manchester who have neurological impairments or who have sustained major trauma.
We have 22 beds in total: 10 Neurological Rehabilitation beds, and 12 Trauma Rehabilitation beds (as part of the Greater Manchester Major Trauma Collaborative).
We accept patients with a variety of conditions, including:
- Traumatic or Spontaneous Brain Injury (e.g. bleeding to the brain)
- Spinal Cord Injuries
- Multiple trauma
- Other neurological conditions
As a team, we deliver a holistic, friendly, open and patient- centred environment and abide by the Trust values. We work alongside a professional multi-disciplinary team (MDT) which include Medics, Rehab Nurses, Clinical Support Workers, Neuropsychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Speech and Language Therapists, Discharge Co- ordinators and Social Workers.
The ward consists of 3 bays with 7 beds in each bay and 3 side rooms. There is a day room available for patients and relatives to use, although use of this room must comply with infection control precautions.
Admission to the ward is for a period of assessment and rehabilitation to determine the longer term needs of the patients. This may include moving onto another setting once this assessment period is complete. This will be discussed with you by relevant members of the team.
Visiting times
Monday – Sunday 2pm - 5.30pm and then 6.30pm - 8pm.
It is 2 people only at the bedside at any one time and you are to use the chairs provided and not sit on the bed.

Telephone numbers
The contact number for Ward L1 is: 0161 206 0498 or 0161 206 3111.
We advise that you ring the ward after 9am as the nursing staff will be completing medication rounds, personal cares and ensuring patients have had their breakfast before this time.
Recommendations
We recommend that as a relative you bring in some personal items such as:
- Comfy clothes/lounge wear
- Pyjamas
- Underwear
- Jacket to wear if going outside
- Safe footwear (trainers if possible)
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Shower gel/soap
Any personal property such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops etc are brought in at your own risk.
Due to the nature of the ward, we do not allow under 16-year- olds on the ward. Following discussion with the senior nursing team, we may be able to support younger children visiting in the day room if required.
We are unable to heat up any food on the ward as we have no facilities for this. We can store chilled items that are clearly labelled with name and date.
Infection Control
Due to infection control precautions the ward is not able to have balloons, fans or flowers at the bedside. We also advise that any photographs, pictures or letters are laminated so that they can be kept clean to comply with infection control procedures.
Therapy
Therapy is provided by either the Neuro or Trauma rehab teams. On arrival, there will be an initial assessment, after which the therapists will advise on the future input required.
The therapy staff will determine the frequency with which patients are seen and the therapy assistants will also support the programmes set by the therapists.
It is also expected that patients take part in the rehabilitation groups we offer on the ward, as these are an important part of the therapy programme. Your therapists will advise whether these are suitable for you.
