This leaflet contains discharge advice following your attendance to the Accident & Emergency Department (A&E) or Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC).
You have been diagnosed with a fracture (break) to one or more bones in the lesser or big toe.
Discharge advice
These type of fractures heal well in most cases without any problems.
If you have been provided with toe strapping, this can be removed after 2-3 weeks.
It can be more comfortable to wear either hard soled boots or sandals, moving back into comfortable supportive shoes when the pain and swelling allows.
The pain and tenderness will settle but this can take up to 3 to 6 weeks.
Most patient can return to work at around 3 weeks after the initial injury. If you have a job which requires you to perform heavy manual work you can return after 6 weeks.
Your symptoms will settle to just niggling issues at around 6 weeks but swelling can persist for many months. If you are having significant problems above and beyond these minor issues you can contact us again through the fracture help line.
