What is an AFO?

You have been supplied with an AFO which is designed to control your foot and ankle. The Orthotist has designed this device for your specific problem, so if you experience any changes in your limb or if you feel that the AFO provides inadequate control you must let the Orthotics department know immediately.

What am I entitled to?

You are entitled to one AFO (or one pair if both legs are affected), you will only be given a second item (pair) after inspection of your original AFO by the Orthotist and for the following reasons:

  • If you are unable to manage daily living activities without the AFO
  • If your original AFO is deemed to be clinically ineffective by the Orthotist
  • If your original AFO is beyond repair

Theft, loss or damage of your AFO

If your AFO is stolen you will need to obtain a crime number from the police before we are able to order a replacement. If your AFO is lost or damaged (either accidentally or maliciously) you will be asked to pay for its replacement. The average cost of replacement of a single adult AFO is £220.

How should the AFO be worn?

  • The AFO should be worn over a cotton sock
  • Whilst seated on a bed or chair place your leg in the device ensuring the bottom of your foot is in contact with the footplate
  • Fasten all straps securely
  • Apply your shoe - low heeled, laced casuals are most appropriate

Are there any safety precautions I should take?

  • Always check that straps are secure and remain secure when standing
  • Regularly check the AFO for wear or damage

How should I care for the AFO?

  • Clean the AFO regularly with mild soap and water without immersing fully in water
  • Dry with a towel away from direct sources of heat such as a radiator
  • Any joints should be cleaned regularly using an old toothbrush or similar
  • Look after the AFO and return it for repair when necessary. You should never attempt to modify or adjust the AFO yourself

What problems should I be aware of?

If you notice any of the following, please contact the Orthotics department as soon as possible.

  • Skin redness that doesn’t fade after 15 minutes
  • Sores or blisters on the skin
  • Pain, irritation or rubbing
  • Any damage to the AFO

Further appointments

Following the supply of your first AFO you will be given a review appointment at the discretion of the Orthotist and you will be instructed as to the follow up procedure for further visits.

However, if you feel your condition has not improved, has worsened or you are experiencing problems with the AFO, you can ask to see the Orthotist by telephoning the Orthotics department where you had your original appointment.
