What does the hosiery do?
The hosiery you have received is prescribed to enhance the circulation in your legs and possibly to reduce swelling. It is very likely that your legs will feel constricted by your hosiery though this should not be uncomfortable.
What am I entitled to?
You are entitled to two pairs of elastic stockings or tights.
Theft, loss or damage to your hosiery
If your hosiery is stolen you will need to obtain a crime number from the police before we are able to order you a replacement.
If your hosiery is lost or damaged (either accidentally or maliciously) you will be asked to pay for its replacement. The average cost of replacement of hosiery is £50.
How should I apply the hosiery?
- Put the hosiery on whilst sitting on a bed or chair - you will have been shown the easiest method and we may have supplied a sock to help you slip the stocking over your toes. Your hosiery will also contain a written information leaflet which will instruct you as to the putting on procedure
- Roll the stocking up the leg avoiding wrinkles
- Ensure your toes are not restricted
- Do not fold over the tops of the stockings as this will increase the pressure which could be dangerous
How should I care for my hosiery?
- Ensure your hosiery is washed regularly in accordance with manufacturer's instructions
- Remove stockings before going to bed unless told otherwise
- Be sure you are able to put on your hosiery or have someone who can help you
What problems should I be aware of?
If you notice any of the following, please contact the Orthotics department as soon as possible on the telephone number at the top of this leaflet.
- Marking on the skin that doesn’t fade after 15 minutes of removal of hosiery
- Sores or blisters
- Pain, irritation or rubbing
- Any damage to the hosiery
Further appointments
You will not be given a further appointment automatically. However, if you feel your condition has not improved, has worsened or you are experiencing problems with your hosiery you can ask to see the Orthotics Officer or Orthotist for a review appointment by telephoning the Orthotics department where you had your original appointment.
