What is a Functional Foot Orthosis (FFO)?
The FFO you have received is designed to improve the function and alignment of your foot.
Some types of FFO push the foot into a completely different position. This will mean that pressure is applied to some areas of your foot. Careful introduction to this type of FFO is important.
The Orthotist has designed this device for your specific problem, so if you experience any changes in your foot or if you feel that the FFO provides inadequate control you must let the Orthotics department know immediately.
What am I entitled to?
You are entitled to one pair of FFO’s. One item (pair) is sufficient as it is transferable from shoe to shoe.
A second item/pair will only be provided if:
- The original item is deemed to be clinically ineffective
- The original item is beyond repair
Theft, loss or damage of your FFO
If your FFO is stolen you will need to obtain a crime number from the police before we are able to order you a replacement.
If your FFO is lost or damaged (either accidentally or maliciously) you will be asked to pay for its replacement. The average cost of an FFO is £100.
Are there any safety precautions I should take?
- Regularly check your FFO for wear or damage
- Never attempt to modify or adapt your FFO yourself
How should I care for my Orthosis?
- Remove the FFO from your shoe each evening
- Regularly wipe your FFO with a damp cloth to keep clean without immersing in water
- Dry with a towel away from direct sources of heat such as a radiator
- Your FFO should be checked every 12 months by your Orthotist or more frequently if advised
- Look after the FFO and return it for repair/replacement as necessary
What problems should I be aware of?
If you notice any of the following, please contact the Orthotics department as soon as possible:
- Skin redness that doesn’t fade after 15 minutes
- Sores or blisters
- Pain, irritation or rubbing
- Any damage to the FFO
Further appointments
Following the supply of your first pair of FFO’s you will be reviewed at the discretion of the Orthotist.
However, if you feel your condition has not improved, has worsened or you are experiencing problems you can ask to see the Orthotist for a review appointment by phoning the Orthotics department where you had your original appointment.
