What is a Functional Foot Orthosis (FFO)?
The FFO you have received is designed to improve the function and alignment of your child’s foot. Some types of FFO push the foot into a completely different position. This will mean that pressure is applied to some areas of the foot. Careful introduction to this type of Orthosis is important.
The Orthotist has designed this device for your child’s specific condition, so if you notice any changes in your child’s foot or if you feel that the Orthosis is providing inadequate control you must let the Orthotic department know immediately.
What is my child entitled to?
Your child is entitled to one functional foot Orthosis (or pair if both feet are affected). Usually one item (pair) is sufficient as it is transferable from shoe to shoe.
Theft, loss or damage of your child’s orthosis
If the FFO is stolen you will need to obtain a crime number from the police before we are able to order a replacement.
If the FFO is lost or damaged (either accidentally or maliciously) you will be asked to pay for its replacement. The average cost of a paediatric functional foot orthosis is £90.
Are there any safety precautions we should take?
- Regularly check the FFO for wear or damage
- Never attempt to modify or adapt the FFO yourself
How should I care for the FFO?
- Remove the FFO from your child’s shoe each evening
- Regularly wipe the FFO with a damp cloth to keep clean without immersing in water
- Dry with a towel away from direct sources of heat such as a radiator
- Your child’s FFO should be checked regularly by your Orthotist
- You are responsible for looking after the FFO and returning it for repair/replacement
What problems should I be aware of?
If you notice any of the following, please contact the Orthotic department as soon as possible.
- Skin redness that doesn’t fade after 15 minutes
- Sores or blisters on your child’s skin
- Pain, irritation or rubbing
- Any damage to the FFO
Further appointments
Following the supply of the orthosis you will be reviewed at the discretion of the orthotist. However, if you feel your child’s condition has not improved, has worsened or they are experiencing problems with the orthosis you can ask to see the Orthotist before your planned review appointment by telephoning the Orthotics department where you had your original appointment.
