What does the thumb spica do?

A thumb spica is provided to immobilise the joint at the base of the thumb and allow the joint to be rested, thereby easing any pain or discomfort associated with normal or overuse. It also provides a mild bracing effect to protect the base of the thumb. The support does not interfere with the movement of the fingers. It also allows movement of the end joint of the thumb and therefore does not reduce hand function significantly.

What is my entitlement?

You are entitled to one thumb spica, or a pair if both thumbs are affected. A second support/pair will only be provided if:

  • It is required long term
  • It is deemed to be clinically effective
  • You are unable to function without it
  • The original thumb spica is beyond repair

Theft, loss or damage of the thumb spica

If the thumb spica is stolen you will need to obtain a crime number from the police before we are able to order a replacement. If your thumb spica is lost or damaged (either accidentally or maliciously) you will be asked to pay for its replacement. The average cost of a replacement thumb spica is £15.

How should I wear the thumb spica?

You will be shown how to wear your thumb spica at the time of supply.

How should I care for the thumb spica? Elasticated or neoprene type:

  • Remove the shaped supporting strip from its pocket before washing the support
  • The support can be washed in a washing machine on a woollens’ cycle
  • After washing, the support can be dried near a gentle heat source e.g. near a radiator. DO NOT TUMBLE DRY
  • Once dry, replace the shaped supporting strip back in its pocket

Plastic shell type:

  • The cotton liner supplied with the thumb spica can be washed in a washing machine on a woollens’ cycle
  • After washing, the liner can be dried near a gentle heat source
  • e.g. near a radiator. DO NOT TUMBLE DRY
  • The plastic shell can be wiped with a damp cloth and mild detergent and left to air dry

What problems should I be aware of?

If you notice any of the following, please contact the Orthotics department as soon as possible on the telephone number at the top of this leaflet.

  • Skin redness that doesn’t fade after 15 minutes
  • Sores or blisters on the skin
  • Pain, irritation or rubbing
