What is an EEG?

An EEG is a test that measures electrical activity in the brain.

Why might my doctors order an EEG?

It can help to doctors work out whether a child has epilepsy.

Where is the EEG completed

This test is completed at North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH) Neurophysiology department and your child will be transferred there for the test.

How will your child be transferred to NMGH?

The clinicians will review your child and plan on the best way to transfer your child to NMGH. A number of resources are used in guiding this decision such as a transfer risk assessment which will identify whether your child requires paramedic transfer with a nurse and/or a doctor or whether it is safe for you to take your child either in your own transport or in a taxi arranged by the hospital.

If you are transferred in your own transport or in a taxi arranged by the hospital, your medical team will identify what to look out for and what to do in case of an emergency.

In case of emergency:

• Stop the transport at the side of the road
• Call 999 and ask for emergency assistance
• Explain that your child is being transferred from Royal Oldham Hospital to North Manchester Hospital for an EEG
• Use a timer to monitor how long the emergency event has taken place, as this will support the medical team in the next steps

What happens when I get to the hospital?

Enter the hospital at the Main Entrance and follow the signs to the Neurophysiology department. This is on the first floor and there is a lift (F9) nearby if you are unable to use the stairs. Please register at Reception and you will be directed to the consultation room when the team are ready to see you.

How do I return to Royal Oldham Hospital following the test?

On completion of the test, please call The Childrens Ward at Royal Oldham Hospital on 0161 627 8866 and let the nursing staff know your child’s name, and that you are ready to return from EEG appointment at North Manchester Hospital.

The nursing staff should confirm the location where you will be picked up. Normally this is clearly identified at each hospital entrance at NMGH.
