Cancer - Macmillan Acute Oncology Nursing Service

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust consists of 4 hospital sites.

These are Royal Oldham Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital, Bury and Rochdale Infirmary. These are known as the North East Sector and are also referred to as BRO (Bury, Rochdale and Oldham). The 4th hospital site is Salford Royal Hospital.

This information leaflet will provide details for the Macmillan Acute Oncology Service that covers the BRO hospital sites.

About Us

As you have been admitted to hospital with a problem related to your cancer or cancer treatment, you have been referred to the Macmillan Acute Oncology Service.

The aim of our service is to support you and those who care about you through your inpatient stay. We will work closely with your treating team to help ensure you receive the best possible care in a timely fashion.

What we can offer:

The Acute Oncology Service (AOS) aims to provide a co-ordinated approach to your care by:

  • Providing support and advice to you on your admission to hospital because of your cancer or cancer treatment
  • Supporting the wider multi-disciplinary teams with the appropriate management of you by offering expert oncology advice
  • Maintaining strong communication links with your treating oncology team
  • If you have been diagnosed with a new cancer, we will ensure you are referred on to the correct cancer pathway. Where no clear primary cancer is identified. The Acute Oncology Service will facilitate a discussion at Malignancy Unknown Origin/Cancer Unknown Primary Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting

The Service Aims: 

  • To provide advice on managing side effects of your cancer/ cancer treatment
  • Ensure that you only receive appropriate tests and complications
  • Ensure that you are not kept in hospital any longer than necessary
  • Ensure you are referred/signposted to other teams that my help you through your cancer journey

Operating Hours

The Macmillan Acute Oncology Service operates between the hours or 8:30am-16:30 Monday to Sunday (inclusive of bank holidays).

In the event that you ring outside of our normal working hours, there is a voicemail service that you can leave a message on and we aim to respond within one working day.
