Physiotherapy - Neen 'Pericalm' Electric Stimulator

You are being loaned the Neen ‘Pericalm’ stimulator to assist with the treatment of your bladder or bowel problem. The electrical stimulation is used to help reduce the symptoms of urgency, leakage and weak pelvic floor muscles.

The stimulator will help to increase your awareness of what a pelvic floor contraction should feel like. Exercising your pelvic floor whilst using the stimulator will help to improve the strength of your muscles.

When should I exercise my pelvic floor?

To make sure you are exercising correctly, please follow the ‘Pelvic Floor Exercise’ leaflet.

  • You should try to use the Pericalm five days each week
  • On days you use the Pericalm, you should also exercise your pelvic floor twice
  • On days that you do not or cannot use the Pericalm, you should exercise the pelvic floor three times

For maximum effect, it is important that you follow the advice and continue with the exercises given to you as well as using the stimulator regularly.

The ‘Pericalm’

  • The ‘Pericalm’ is for your use only
  • Each unit is supplied with a brand-new probe
  • Your ‘Pericalm’ programme will be reviewed every four weeks. It is essential that you bring the stimulator with you for every appointment to enable adjustments to your treatment programme
  • The loan is for a maximum of three months, at which time you will be expected to return it

Please note: You will need to pay a £40.00 deposit to loan out the unit. This will be refunded on return of the unit.

Care of your ‘Pericalm’

  • The Probe should be cleaned between each use with warm soapy water and then left to dry. Ensure that the wire connections do not get wet. If there is any damage to the wires, please contact your therapist for a new probe. You will not be charged for this
  • The Unit should be wiped once a week with a damp cloth. Do not use sprays or alcohol based cleaning solutions
  • If you have any vaginal infections (e.g. thrush) dispose of the probe and contact the physiotherapist
  • Avoid stretching and twisting the leads/wires. Ensure there are no loose connections before each use. Inform your therapist if there is a problem

Do not use the stimulator:

  • If you have a pacemaker or vagus nerve stimulator
  • When using or operating machinery or driving a car
  • If you think you may be pregnant
  • If you have a vaginal, bladder or bowel infection or a stomach bug
  • When you are menstruating (on your period)
  • If you have post-treatment soreness or bleeding (contact your therapist for advice)
  • If you have had an abnormal smear result
  • When in water
  • If you have a copper contraceptive coil

Using your ‘Pericalm’

The manufacturers instructions and information leaflet are included with the unit. Please read these carefully.

The unit has been programmed for you and you do not need to alter this.

  • Connect the leads from the probe to the leads for the unit and insert into channel ‘A’ (this is the connection on the top left of the stimulator)
  • Press the ‘Power’ button at the top of the stimulator
  • Apply a water-based lubricating jelly to the probe
  • Insert the probe as demonstrated by your therapist
  • You can increase or decrease the intensity to suit your need by pressing the ‘+’ or ‘-‘buttons on the left of the stimulator.
  • To stop the programme press the ‘Power’ button at the top

Failure to return the stimulator when requested will mean you are asked to pay for a replacement, costing approximately
£100.00 (as per the agreement).

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your treatment or use of the stimulator, please contact your therapist on 0161 206 5328.
