Physiotherapy - Positions to help you cope when you feel short of breath

Being breathless can be exhausting and distressing. The below positions in this leaflet can help you to control your breathing.

Your physiotherapist will select the most appropriate positions for you.

The following positions will help relaxation of the upper chest whilst encouraging use of your diaphragm. Breathe at a rate that is comfortable for you. As control is gained, you will be able to slow your breathing.

Relaxed standing

Lean back or forwards against a wall, with your feet slightly apart. If you are leaning back, let your hands hang loosely by your sides. If you are leaning forwards, rest your hands over the top of your head.

Position as described above

High side lying

Lie on your side with a few pillows under your head and shoulders. Your knees and hips should be slightly bent.

  Position as described above

Relaxed sitting

Sit leaning forwards with your elbows resting on your knees.

Position as described above

Forward lean sitting

Sit leaning forward with your elbows resting on a table. You can also place pillows on the table to rest your head whilst in this position.
