What is a sinogram/fistulogram/conduitogram?
This is an xray examination of your wound.
Who performs the investigation?
A radiologist will carry out this investigation assisted by a radiographer. Radiologists are specially trained to interpret the images and carry out more complex examinations. They are supported by radiographers who are highly trained to carry out xrays and other imaging procedures.
What does the investigation involve?
Once in the xray department you will be asked to change into a hospital gown. You will then be taken into the xray room and asked to lie on the xray bed. The radiologist will insert a small plastic tube into the opening in your wound and xray dye will be passed through the tube. This enables your wound to be seen on the xray pictures.
A number of xray pictures will then be taken of the area and you will be asked to lie in different positions whilst the pictures are being taken. At the end of the investigation the plastic tube will be removed and a small dressing applied. If you would normally have a drainage bag over your wound it would be advisable to bring a spare one with you.
How long does the investigation take and is it painful?
The investigation will take about 20 minutes. It is not a painful procedure though you may experience some slight discomfort around the opening on the skin when the dye is injected through the tube.
Are there any side effects/after effects?
There are no side/after effects from this investigation.
How do you get the results of your investigation?
The results of your investigation will be sent to the consultant who referred you for the investigation.
Important - could you be pregnant?
