Stroke Wards - Welcome to the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit (SRU)

The Stroke Rehabilitation Unit (SRU) is a sixteen bedded unit caring for both male and female patients needing rehabilitation following an acute stroke.

The ward consists of three bays and four side rooms. There is a day room for patients and relatives to use. In the day room you will find a TV, DVD player and other resources such as books and games which you are free to use.

There is also a lovely garden/courtyard area which is accessible to all via Bay One, for patients and relatives to use.

Visiting times

Visiting is daily between 1.30pm – 5pm and 6.30pm - 8pm.

It is two people per bed side at any one time. You are asked to use the chairs provided and not sit on the bed.

Where possible, we advise that children do not visit.

Mealtimes

Protected mealtimes are 12.30pm until 1.30pm and 5.30pm until 6.30pm.

You may be asked to leave during these hours. However, you can support your loved one with meals during mealtimes. If you would like to do this, then please let a member of the nursing team know.

We are unable to heat up any food on the ward as we do not have the facilities available to do this.

Telephone numbers

The contact numbers for SRU are 0161 206 1901or 0161 206 1283.

We advise that you ring the ward after 10am where possible, as the nursing staff will be completing medication rounds, personal care and ensuring patients have had their breakfast.

Ward manager

The current ward manager for SRU is Janet Collins, who can be contacted on the ward Monday – Friday between 7am - 3pm. Outside of these hours please do not hesitate to leave a message with one of the nursing team and Janet will get back to you as soon as possible.

Medical team

The medical team are available Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm. It consists of a Medical Consultant, Nurse Consultant, Advanced Clinical Practitioner, junior doctors and physician associate.  Outside of these hours the ward is covered by the on-call medical team.

There is a consultant led ward round on Monday and Thursdays with further medical reviews for patients as required.
Multidisciplinary (MDT) meetings occur every Tuesday morning when the whole MDT discusses each patient. Family meetings, by appointment, happen Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.

Therapy Information:

Physiotherapists

Physiotherapy following a stroke involves techniques and exercises to improve control and movement of the body. The aim of any treatment plan is to enable you to become as functionally independent as possible. Physiotherapist will be able to advise you and your family/carers on the most effective and safe way for you to move, if your mobility has been affected by your stoke.

Occupational therapist

Occupational therapists assess how your stroke has affected your concentration, memory and ability to conduct and organise everyday activities. This may involve practicing certain everyday activities, the use of equipment to assist with or simplify tasks, as well as assessing your memory, concentration, and cognitive abilities.

As part of discharge planning the occupational therapist may visit your home to assess the environment and your ability to manage at home. They may recommend and order equipment/ adaptations to your home to increase your independence and safety.

Recommendations

We recommend that relatives where possible bring in the following:

  • Comfortable day clothes
  • Underwear
  • Pyjamas
  • Tooth paste and toothbrush
  • Shaving equipment
  • Hairbrush
  • Shower gel

We do advise that any personal property such as jewellery, laptops, tablets, mobile phones etc are brought onto the ward at your own risk.

Infection control

Please wash your hands upon entering to the ward. Please do not be offended if this is challenged by our ward staff; we are working hard to protect our patients from infections.

Due to infection control precautions, the ward is not able to have balloons or flowers at the bedside. We also advise that any photographs, pictures, or letters are laminated so that they can be kept clean to prevent any infections.

Patient/relative feedback

If you would like to leave any feedback for the ward, there are numerous ways you can do so.

We have a patient feedback book at the reception desk where patients/relatives can leave comments.

Alternatively, you may contact via the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).

Further Support

Salford’s carer support service holds a weekly drop in session at the Hope Building main reception every Monday where our patients and service users can come along and seek help, advice and support.

You can visit the Stroke Association website for further information.
