Royal Oldham Phase 4a Extension - Progress Update - May/June 2022

Progress Update - May/June 2022

Good progress continues to be made on construction works for the new £28m four-storey ward extension and theatres refurbishment at The Royal Oldham Hospital, which will enable the hospital to operate as the hub site for high risk and emergency general and colorectal surgery in Greater Manchester.

Progress to date

To date, internal demolition works have been completed, removing all the existing infrastructure for the theatres refurbishment, enabling the new build works to start within the existing hospital building.

A steel frame is currently being erected for the new wards that will be located within the main build extension. Works are currently on schedule and are expected to continue for several weeks. The steel frame and metal decking will form part of the new extension and the attached photos show you the shape and size of the new extension.

As the main build works progress, it is expected that the amount of traffic on site will increase, so a new access road is being constructed in and out of the site to help minimise disruption.

Forthcoming Construction Works

New Build Extension:

  • Completion of the superstructure.
  • Start and progression of roof works, boarding and cladding to enable the building to become watertight towards the end of the year.

Theatres Refurbishment:

  • Fit out (installations of new infrastructure and finishes) for the first phase of theatres
  • Start of the second phase of theatre refurbishments and completion of the internal demolition.

The development is expected to be completed in late 2023.
